Why is gender-responsiveness important in Transitional Justice (TJ) processes?

Because the experiences and needs of women and men are different. A gender-responsive process will ensure that the perspectives women and men have on past events and abuses are accounted for, without doing further harm. It is also a means of ensuring that the different perspectives and demands from a justice system are acknowledged, and the measures and mechanisms established respond to these differences.

These 10 steps are intended to inform governments, international organizations, and civil society involved in TJ processes. They were developed by ICAN and validated by members in the Women’s Alliance for Security Leadership (WASL). ICAN would like to thank everyone who provided input to this document!
