“Set in the intimacy of a powerful woman’s home, the evening was as peaceful as a Peacebuilder’s event should be. But it was so much more. It was humbling, gratifying and motivating…. It reminded me of how much more work which still has to be done.”
– Caron Asgarali, Gun Violence Survivor, Motivational Speaker, Writer, Activist
The She Builds Peace campaign launched in Trinidad and Tobago in March 2020 with a celebration of local women peacebuilders, facilitated by Sabrina Mowlah-Baksh. This event recognized, affirmed, and celebrated women peacebuilders and their critical work. It gathered a specialized cadre of women peacebuilders from different sectors to begin a coordinated approach to peacebuilding in the country. The event was described as creating a sense of solidarity and support for the work of women peacebuilders.
The Feature Address was given by Folade Mutota, Executive Director of the Women’s Institute for Alternative Development (WINAD). WINAD is acclaimed for its work on countering gun violence in Trinidad and Tobago and the Caribbean region. Ms. Mutota, the leading expert in the country on issues relevant to women’s peace and security, spoke on the theme “Strategies for Building Peace in Conflicted Communities.”
