The International Civil Society Action Network (ICAN)’s Better Peace Initiative (BPI) is launching a new resource! 10 Steps to Ensure a Gender-Responsive and Inclusive Constitution-Drafting Process is a practical guidance document intended to inform governments, international organizations, women peacebuilders and other civil society advocating for and engaged in constitutional reform processes. Women have a key role to play in developing constitutions that will ensure equal rights for all and adhere to the principles of the global women, peace and security (WPS) agenda. These 10 steps on how to ensure inclusion are now available in English and Arabic, with Farsi/Persian language coming soon.
The 10 Steps to Ensure a Gender-Responsive and Inclusive Constitution-Drafting Process were developed by ICAN with input and advice from members in the Women’s Alliance for Security Leadership (WASL) and other experts. We would specifically like to thank Abir Haj Ibrahim, Visaka Darmadhasa and Marie-Joëlle Zahar for their contributions and feedback to this document.
The 10-step series is part of BPI’s ongoing development of innovative advocacy tools focused on thematic issues of peace talks. Our resources are used by grassroots women peacebuilders as well as diplomats and governments determined to implement inclusivity and gender responsive approaches in their work. ICAN also delivers expert advice, tailored seminars, and trainings for a range of actors, including our local partners in WASL, the United Nations, government actors and others.
The Better Peace Initiative resources are made possible with generous support from Global Affairs Canada, the Compton Foundation, the Channel Foundation, the Royal Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs, the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO), the UNDP and UN Women.
