Women peacebuilders have a long history of active participation in preventing and resolving conflict. The unanimous adoption in 2000 of UN Security Council Resolution 1325 – the foundation of the international Women, Peace and Security (WPS) agenda – acknowledged that women are not only disproportionately impacted by conflict, but are powerful agents of change, and called for their voices to be directly included in formal processes to prevent, end, and rebuild after war. Despite efforts to implement the WPS Agenda, gaps remain, including: lack of awareness and recognition of the contributions of women peacebuilders; insufficient access to high-level decision-making tables, and; significant underfunding of women-led organizations and women peacebuilders. How to address these gaps requires urgent attention.
