A Legitimate Peace: balancing international involvement with local ownership and short-term with long-term peacebuilding needs

Harmonizing short-term and long-term needs in peace processes is a well-known difficulty. One of the key challenges relates to the disjointed and siloed nature of the work of different actors operating in peace processes and conflict-affected settings. The variety of development, humanitarian, security, and military actors all have different mandates, goals and operating procedures which has made genuine integration of objectives and peace outcomes difficult. What shifts are needed to increase the legitimacy, durability and inclusivity of peace processes? What are the traps to avoid and the ‘Must-Dos’ to support a more durable approach to peace?

The panel will bring together ministerial level government representatives, eminent members of the International Commission for Inclusive Peace as well as senior UN officials to discuss on these questions.
