About the Organization
The Center for Civil Society and Democracy (CCSD) is an independent, nonprofit, non-governmental organization based in Syria. CCSD seeks to build a stable, just, and democratic society where peace and respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms prevail for all Syrians, regardless of their gender, religious, or ethnic affiliation.
Since its establishment in 2011, CCSD has worked to build a stronger, more pluralistic civil society by supporting organizations and individuals, promoting human rights, gender equality, dialogue, and respect for diversity. CCSD adopts a human rights-based approach to women’s rights and gender equality, and strongly believes that democracy cannot be achieved without equality and gender justice.
Its programs have included promoting women’s leadership at the social, political, and economic levels, addressing gender discrimination and gender-based violence, strengthening civic engagement for transparent and democratic institutions, and supporting economic empowerment and livelihoods.
ICAN’s Innovative Peace Fund has supported CCSD since 2020.

Stories & Features
CCSD launched the “She Builds Peace” campaign with 50 Syrian women residing in Turkey and holding Turkish citizenship in order to build a strong network where women can exchange experiences and knowledge.

In Syria, we call for support in the political process and for the meaningful participation of women and civil society in the peace process. We won’t have a sustainable peace without a strong women presence.
