Ukrainian peacebuilder Nina Potarska sails to challenge illegal blockade of Gaza

Nina Potarska, a member of the ICAN-spearheaded Women’s Alliance for Security Leadership, is currently at sea with the Global Sumud Flotilla, a civilian-led mission organized with the Freedom Flotilla Coalition, en route to Gaza.

The flotilla is part of a long-standing nonviolent effort by international civil society to challenge the blockade on Gaza and draw attention to the dire humanitarian situation. These missions aim to assert civilian protection, freedom of movement, and humanitarian access under international law, while accompanying or delivering symbolic or essential aid and international observers.

Nina reflects on her participation as an act of witness and solidarity:

For me, this is a mission — but not in the usual sense. It is also an attempt to be present, and to build a living bridge of solidarity between Ukraine and Palestine.

As a Ukrainian, I know what war and occupation mean — not in abstract terms, but through everyday life: fear, loss of control, the need to survive in conditions where life becomes fragile and uncertain. This is why I feel such a deep connection to what is happening in Gaza.

It feels important to speak about this not in the language of geopolitics, but in the language of human dignity and care.

I am also increasingly aware of the double standards within international law and humanitarian support. Some suffering is recognized and supported, while other suffering is pushed aside or explained away through politics.

In every war, there are those who profit and those who hold on to power. And there are ordinary people who are simply trying to survive.

Maybe we cannot change this quickly. But we can at least try to gently shake this wall — through presence, through words, through solidarity.

The Global Sumud Flotilla brings together activists, lawyers, doctors, parliamentarians, and civil society actors from multiple countries, continuing a series of past flotilla efforts that have sought to challenge restrictions on maritime access to Gaza and amplify calls for protection of civilians.
