Women Education and Development Organization of Liberia

The Women Education and Development Organization of Liberia (WEDOL) launched the She Builds Peace campaign to increase recognition and protection for women peacebuilders. In order to raise awareness of the campaign, WEDOL’s volunteers conducted door-to-door sensitization using megaphones and broadcasted on community radio stations.

WEDOL also organized a parade for women, youth groups, local heads of community-based organizations, cultural dance groups and the Liberian national police, attended by approximately 300 people. Each of Liberia’s 15 counties sent a young woman representative who identified as a local peacebuilder. The campaign was officially launched by the gender coordinator of Margibi County, Madam Danielta Asilton and attended by a representative from the US Embassy accredited to Liberia, Madam Kolanah Sando, other local officials.

Outcomes and Impacts:

  • Key stakeholders in Liberia have voiced support for women peacebuilders. WEDOL has reported an increase in peacebuilding initiatives in many communities.
  • Women peacebuilders have appeared on radio talk shows to showcase their work and advocate on crucial issues such as SGBV.
  • Women have established Village Saving Loan Associations (VSLA).
